Hiding Away Tuesday

I haven’t been doing such a good job the last couple of days. Thought about hiding for a bit. 😛

Then I realized it helps you guys out more when you see I’m human too. 😀

The last couple of nights I have been famished at around 11pm. Not sure why but I have been really hungry lately.  I had 3 separate snacks last night which pushed me way over my normal calorie limit.

About the only good thing I can take from the last couple of nights is that I didn’t hit Taco Bell.

You guys continue to keep me from hitting Taco Bell. I wish I had been doing my blog for a longer period of time so you could see some of my biggest unplanned cheats to see that I have made numerous mistakes over the course of this diet. The key to my success has been shrugging those mistakes off and getting back to work.

Another bounce up but I expected that one. I ate too much yesterday and I ate a bunch really late and I used way too much sriracha so I also had too much sodium.

Aquarium Update

Perhaps my Haiku for Sole Survivor was a little too soon. I have spotted him in the coral cave but he looks a little beat up and I think he now refuses to come out of the cave.  

I’m thinking once again of getting a few more hiding spots and tossing a few more shrimp in there. 😛 Circle of life.

Yesterday’s Meal Plan

I didn’t eat the canary but if it wasn’t nailed down, I probably tried to eat the whole apartment last night.

Breakfast – Hamburger patty, cheese slice

Lunch – Tuna with avocados and salad

Dinner – Chicken salad

Snack – Avocado, String cheese, Chicken thighs with salad

Calories – 1950

On top of the bad eating lately, I am also using too much Splenda. I have no idea if this is a good or bad thing, but I think I need to start limiting myself a bit. The package stated there are no carbs, but all the online info states that there is one carb per packet.  I’ve been going a bit overboard with that stuff because it really does have the taste and texture of real sugar, so from this day hence, 3 packets a day. 😀

Biking Update

Maybe If I had one of these I would get off the couch and up to the levee. 😀

I’ve been bad more often than good lately and that carried over to Memorial Day. I was able to easily convince myself that the holiday was a day of rest and relaxation so no ride on Monday.

I’ve been slacking far too much when it comes to the bike lately but I am not sure how to get my mojo back. 😛

I will be out there today. Heck, I need to get out there today because for the first time since I bought the bike, it looks like rain is in the forecast for the whole next week.

Support your weight loss buddies.

We all need plenty of support so make sure you do what you can to help other people on the same little adventure.

I try to visit several current friends and their blogs each day along with making some new friends.  I do get a bit lazy from time to time but I know how important every little comment can be.

One comment can be the difference between someone tossing in the towel or keeping up the fight, so make sure you keep supporting your buddies in the blog world, the forum world and the real world.

Helping others is a great way to actually help yourself too. 😀

The bounce up was due to too much salt and too much nibbling late night. I had a hamburger patty snack at 11pm. I need to stop that. I’ve been doing too much late night nibbling lately.

Biking Update

My legs weren’t up to the task yesterday. I just couldn’t get enough energy going to get my legs moving towards the levee. I am hoping to get a long ride in today but it is SOOOOOOOOO HOT OUT THERE.

Last summer I gave up exercise because of the heat. I don’t want to do that this year, but I might lower the number of rides per week. Not sure what to do, but I don’t want the heat burning me out.

It appears Sole Survivor is no longer with us. I haven’t spotted him in about 3 days so Blutto must have got him when he came out of the coral cave to eat.  Mean old Blutto just couldn’t play nice.

Tip Of The Day

Plateaus

Get used to them. They will happen. They can vary in length from a few days to a few weeks.

Over the past 20 years I have dieted numerous times. Usually once or twice a year. My most successful diets would always end at 230. For some reason my body would always hit a MAJOR plateau at that weight.  In the past, I always let the plateaus win. I would get so frustrated that I would eventually cave in and toss in the towel.

Don’t you dare do that. 😛

Don’t let the plateau win. Here is a list of things to do when on a plateau:

1. Analyze your diet. A food log is super important and during a plateau, you can look over that food journal to determine if you are eating too many calories.

2.Support Groups. During a plateau, support is tremendously important. You need a place to vent your frustration and anger amongst people who understand what you are dealing with.  I vent on a football forum that has a weight loss thread and it helps me a lot.

3.Exercise – Are you getting any? Are you getting too much? Just remember that if you are working out a lot, you are replacing fat with heavier muscle.  The scale will not move while you do this. It might even creep up some. You are getting healthier, but it is still frustrating when the scale won’t move.

4.Shock the system. Perhaps you have been doing such a great job with your calorie count, your body has adjusted a bit to the lower calories. Many people will suggest a cheat to get things moving again.  I have done this when stuck on long plateaus but it hasn’t always worked great for me. You will end up gaining weight that could take a while to get back off. I would use this as a last resort AND don’t use any gain from this step as an excuse to toss in the towel or binge for more than one meal.

5.Remember. Rome wasn’t built-in a day. It didn’t take you one month to pack the weight on so it is going to take time, patience, hard work and lots of patience. 😛  Yeah I know I mentioned it twice. Patience is necessary for a long-term diet. Lots and lots and lots of patience.

Sleepy Sunday

I don’t own any pajamas but if I did, today would be the day to wear them all day on the couch while flipping from channel to channel. I am really exhausted today. 😛

Biking Update

Skipping 3 days in a row guilted me into riding on my normal day off and making sure I did a long ride. This time of year means constant winds from the southeast which means the first 3 miles are always going to be miserable and they were.  The wind was blowing pretty good but with 3 days off, my legs were a bit stronger.  The wind really didn’t bother me too much until about the last half mile stretch of the first 3 miles.

Overall, the ride wasn’t too bad but my neck and butt were screaming at me for about the last 5 miles.

Estimated Road Marker – 660 – 20 miles

Not sure what I am going to do today. I am really tired so I may skip my ride or I may just get out for a short ride. Only time will tell.

I was able to hold my low weight. I really figured I would pop up a bit today because of my big bad burger yesterday. I am happy to see that I was able to have a shrimp poboy and a big jumbo burger within the last few days without gaining weight because I made up for the increased calories with the bike and cutting calories in my other meals.

Yesterday’s Meal Plan

Breakfast – None

Lunch – Jalapeños bun, hot sausage blend burger, jalapeños jack cheese, tiger sauce, sautéed onions, peppers and jalapeños with a Caesar side salad. Yeah, I went for spicy. 😀

Dinner – Hamburger patty and cheese slice

Snack – None

Calories – 1675

Really wanted to skip dinner but around 10pm I caught myself gnawing on my foot, so I decided to grab a patty. My bike ride burns about 1000 calories so that saved me from getting a bounce from my meal at Phil’s Grill. I don’t know if it was my hunger or if it was just a great burger but wow that burger was good at Phil’s.

It is that time again. Yes I had a great meal at Phil’s but that didn’t mean everything was perfect.

I am tired of restaurants proclaiming to offer sautéed or grilled veggies only to have raw veggies that have spent approximately 3 seconds over heat. Those are not sautéed.

Onions and peppers have an entirely different flavor and texture if they are truly sautéed. They go from bitter and crunchy to sweet and soft. They also change color. It really isn’t difficult to tell when the veggies are cooked.

One of my favorite Mexican restaurants can’t ever seem to cook the bells peppers or onions and Phil’s left the jalapeños and bell peppers raw and crunchy which was odd because they got the onions right.

Quit promising me sautéed when all you are doing is serving raw veggies. 😛

Powerball Update

It appears my job woes will not be a problem much longer because my sister has proclaimed she will win the $200,000,000 on Wednesday. 😀

Actually, I am not so certain of her numbers being the winners so anyone with job contacts in the New Orleans area, some help would be appreciated. 😀

Tip Of The Day

 

If you are just starting your diet or even if you have been on it for a while with a long way to go, take some pictures. I really don’t have many before after photos but even I can see the difference from the before after shots I posted the other day. It really inspires the heck out of me to finish the job and to maintain my weight once I reach my final goal.

Don’t just take photos. Take measurements too. Those will help you get through those tough plateaus when you can see that you are losing inches even if the weight is stalled.  If you are exercising, most of the time, the stall is just fat dropping off and heavier muscle being added, which keeps the scale from moving. So taking measurements is a great way to see progress when the scale isn’t moving.

Break out the camera and the tape measure. Take pictures from several angles so you can really see the changes as the occur. I wish I had done that when I started.

Saturday Evening Edition

Biking Update

No ride Wednesday because it is my “always” day off. No ride Thursday because I waited until the last-minute and it was raining. Uh oh, no ride Friday because I waited until the last-minute and I had stomach issues. So no ride in 3 days. Ouch.

One could chastise me and tell me not to wait until the last-minute, but given the hot weather, I only have two options. Early morning or early evening.  Early evening is going to win that battle, every single time.

Saturday is my other “always” day off but given the poor showing this week I felt I needed to get out there today. More on that tomorrow.

Nice dip there. In fact that is a new low surpassing 181.2.  I wasn’t expecting a dip because I had a late night snack around 11pm.

I was starving around 11pm and before I knew what was happening my legs and walked me to the fridge and my hands had stuffed a burger in my mouth. 😛

Not sure what the scale holds for me tomorrow. I assume a gain because I went to lunch with my sister today at Phil’s Grill.

Ghost Shrimp Update

 

The sole survivor is still alive. He hides in the coral cave and only comes out to snag some food before running back into the cave. Anyone that had more than 24 hours is in the money on their Vegas bet.

Tip Of The Day

I’m doing it again. I’m eyeballing most measurements instead of taking the 15 second to find or clean the appropriate measuring cup or spoon. Don’t do that. Measuring is a key component of a successful diet. You need an exact or close approximation of the calories going into you body so it is important to break out the measuring spoons and cups. I used to do it all of the time but I keep getting lazy with this step. Don’t do that. I’ll get back to measuring tomorrow and no more guesstimating.

Before/After Friday

I took a couple of new pictures since I haven’t taken any since February and I’ve lost more weight since then.I’m really not sure what I weigh in this picture. I think it is probably higher than 323, but I don’t know for sure. This picture was taken at a wedding in 2007.

This picture was taken yesterday. I just wish the lighting had been a touch better so you could really see my mutant white hands from wearing biking gloves. 😀

The obligatory belt picture. Just about 18 inches from the belt hole I used to use to the one I now use. About 137 plus pounds gone from the top pictures to the bottom pictures.

Hmmm. I’m a bit surprised by that drop. I guess the phantom weight gain disappeared but now we have a bit of a phantom weight loss. I wasn’t expecting a drop after my FRIED SHRIMP POBOY FEAST. 😛

Lunch – Over stuffed fried shrimp poboy

Dinner – None

Snack – None

I am not sure if I heard angel trumpets or devil trombones but the chorus was singing hallelujah as I ate the shrimp poboy. It was fantastic. Who knew fried food tasted so good? 😛

Skipped meals the rest of the day but in truth the poboy was huge and had almost as many shrimp off the bread as on the bread so I really wasn’t the least bit hungry last night.

I’m still thirsty from the salt which is why I expected at minimum a water gain today. Speaking of water……

IT RAINED!!! Yesterday afternoon is was looking gloomy and it actually rained. I got a rain day and a shrimp poboy all in one day. 😀

Tip Of The Day

Take a vacation.

One of my dear readers came up with this tip and I am going to try it out.

The bike and the wind have been causing me all sorts of misery so I am going to take a week off. Not sure when. I’ll probably wait for July when the heat starts to melt the asphalt but at some point in July, I am going to take a full week off from the bike ride.

Similar to knowing you can cheat on the diet, thus making it easier to hold on to your sanity, I think knowing I can take a week off from the bike will somehow make it a little easier to hit the levee.
