No cake for me!

The epic battle continues in the race to 165.  I’m starting to feel confident in my victory. 😛

Sam – 170

Me – 170.1

There is a good chance I pass him tomorrow. I passed on the delicious looking cake at the birthday party today and he ate a whole piece where normally he would split a piece with my mom. 😀

I’m hoping I break down to 169 tomorrow but if not tomorrow it will happen soon. I have a networking lunch tomorrow. Not sure where we are going to eat, but I will try my best to behave or at least get the best option on the menu.

Yesterday’s Meal Plan

Breakfast – Burger patty and cheese

Lunch – Tuna and salad

Dinner – Broiled chicken and salad

Snack – Cheese

Calories – 1200

Bike – 0

Net Calories – 1200

I told a little fib yesterday to a friend to get out of gong to dinner so I could avoid a big calorie weekend.  He came over and hung out later in the evening and around 9pm he wanted to get some food so we ended up at Popeye’s.  😛

I told him I was going to pick on him for making me watch him eat 5 pieces of chicken with a large mashed potatoes and gravy with 2 biscuits. So here I am, picking on you Doc. 😀

I was tempted to grab something but the race to 165 gave me the willpower to pass. Not easy to pass on that. I’ve only had Popeye’s once in almost 17 months.

Oh, I ended up having to tell him about the fib because his mother (hi Betty) now reads my blog so he was going to find out. Ha.

Biking Update

Weekly roundup. 3 rides of 10 miles. Better than the 2 rides last week but still lower than I would like.

I skipped my ride yesterday.  Oh well, three is better than two which is better than none.  I didn’t get a 2o mile ride in last week so I definitely will get one done in the early part of the week this week.

Tip Of The Day

It is going to be hard. Heck, if it isn’t tough then you are probably eating too much or not doing any exercise. 😛

Some days will stink, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel as I always say. It is true.

Today stunk. I really wanted a piece of that cake. I love those cakes filled with fresh fruit and cream. Yum and yum.  I wanted to grab the whole cake and run out of the house but I did not do that.  😀

Some days are just a bit harder than others. This wasn’t a time for a cheat so I had to pass on the cake. There will be other cakes in the future when I exit the tunnel. 😀

Happy Dieting, see you tomorrow

No Time Saturday: New Low

I have no time….a sentiment best sung by The Guess Who.

Heck, I already had no time and yet I spent time I didn’t have finding that. 😀

Good news. My step dad had a big meal last night and I had a great eating day.

Sam – 170

Me –170.5

The eight pound lead he had last Sunday is gone and I am at a new low. He is really going to start to sweat. We both will be at a birthday party tomorrow and I will keep an eye on him to see if he has a piece of cake. Admittedly, I usually love the cake they have at my step-brothers house(great cake Laura).  It will be tough to pass up.

Woot! Almost under 170. I was probably 12 last time I was under 170 and of course much shorter.

Biking Update

I was unable to force myself up to the levee yesterday.

Tip Of The Day

Don’t toss it all out.

Some people like to toss out all of their old clothes or give them to goodwill. That is great, but you should keep something around to remind you of how far you have come and of how big you once were.

I wear my belt around all the time to show people. I have a couple of new belts but I don’t wear them much. In fact last night I added a new hole in my belt that is 19 inches from the last hole. 😀

A constant reminder for me of where I have come from and where I do not wish to return. So don’t toss all of those giant clothes or belts out. Keep something as a permanent reminder.

New Low Friday: Atkins versus Weight Watchers

The race to 165 continues.

Sam171 (possible scale error. needed new battery)

Me171.9

The daunting 8 pound lead has now dropped to .9 pounds depending on if the 171 was a correct reading. If I have a good weekend, I could be even with my step-dad by Monday. It could be tough because I have one or two bad meal situations over the next few days.  Dinner on Saturday has not been confirmed so I might be able to get through the weekend unscathed.

Weight Statistics

323/171.9/165

172.4 was my last low so I have hit another low. July was not a very good month. I need to have a much better August. Looking back over my records, it looks like I lost 4 pounds in July.  I had to many cheats and menu changes.  No beans or menu changes will happen in August. I’m sticking to low carb until I hit my target weight hopefully by the end of August. Hopefully, when I eat out over the next few days I will be able to stick to the low carb options on the menu.

Yesterday’s Meal Plan

Breakfast – Burger patty with cheese

Lunch – Broiled chicken with salad

Dinner – Broiled chicken with salad

Snack – Cheese

Calories – 1300

Biking – 0

Net Calories – 1300

Good week so far. Hopefully I can get through the weekend with no speed bumps.

Biking

No ride on Thursday. It is my always off day.  I wouldn’t have been able to get up to the levee anyway because it rained all day. Moving my day off from Wednesday to Thursday has been a huge success. No more stressing out over my ride before my Thursday night meeting.

I still haven’t done a 20 mile ride this week.  I am not sure I have one in me.  Only time will tell.

Tip Of The Day

Sometimes you won’t lose weight. Even worse, sometimes you will gain weight.

Keeping a food/weight journal is tremendously important so you can look at what you have been doing to try to figure out what changes need to be made.

Myfitnesspal is a fantastic site for recording your information. For the first year, I used a different site, but it died. 😦

That won’t happen with myfitnesspal. It is much larger and far more active than the site I used to use.

When things stall or your weight goes up, you need to figure out why it isn’t moving in the right direction. It is easy to see why things didn’t move faster for me in July. I went crazy with beans and massive carbs and I had a few cheats.  The wheels came off when I moved out of Atkins induction.

If you review your month and you can’t see any problems with your meals or exercise then you might need to take a harder look at your calories to see if you miscalculated anything like I did with the broiled chicken. If you still find no problems, then stay the course.  If you have a daily calorie deficit then you have to lose weight eventually.  A 3500 calorie deficit is a pound dropped.

Just remember that if you are starting a new exercise regimen, you may gain weight. It is new muscle, but it will keep the scale from moving down.

If you have gone a few months with a calorie deficit and no muscle gained from exercise, it might be time for a trip to the doctor just to see if you have any medical problems with the metabolism.

In most cases, we are eating more than we think or want to think and that is what stalls our progress.  I constantly battle myself to measure things out so I have an accurate reading on my calorie intake.

I can’t stress enough the importance of a daily journal on your weight loss journey. It is one of the key tools for success.  Just remember that you need to act on the information you record. If the weight isn’t coming off, you need to analyze the data and make some changes as necessary.

Happy Dieting, have a great weekend

Weight Watchers versus Atkins:Getting Closer!

Dreary day. Good thing it was my “always off” day for the bike otherwise it would have been a rain skip.

I pulled closer to my step-dad in the battle between WW and Atkins.

Sam170

Me172.9

He weighed himself this morning and he was back to 170 so I am slowly but surely catching up. I see sweat beginning to bead up on his eyebrow. 😀

I feel a stall coming on. I have dropped about 5 pounds since Sunday and that is going to halt at some point. Hopefully I can catch Sam before I stall.

Net Calories – 951

I had a good day on Wednesday with both exercise and eating. I did have a late night salad. It is funny that I feel guilty eating 100 calories. 😀

Biking Update

My legs were a bit wobbly Wednesday. I have moved to the highest front gear and it makes light wind feel like a hurricane.  For the first time in weeks, the sun was out so the ride was hot, humid, and windy.

Road Marker 410 – 10 Miles

Tip Of The Day

Remove temptations. I was at a meeting at a church earlier this evening and I was in charge of cake. I have avoided eating cake now for 16 months but tonight my brain was trying to convince me to bring some home. Actually more than some, there was about half a cake leftover. I kept telling myself I would just stick it in the freezer for a date way way way way way down the line.

The rational part of my brain finally regained control over the cookie monster part of  my brain and I immediately asked if anyone wanted to bring the rest of the cake home. Someone volunteered to bring it home. Good thing. I bet that cake wouldn’t have made it through the night.

Do not bring temptation into the house. Yes, I know, those of you with families have to have some treats around but limit them. If you can, remove all temptation. You can take the kids out for ice cream or a treat. You don’t have to have them in the house.

I have lost about 150 pounds but I have terrible willpower. Don’t look at me like that, it is true. I’ve dropped this weight by having zero bad food in the house. The only way I can cheat is to pick up my keys and head out. I’ve done that several times but most of the time I have been able to stop myself.

Out of sight, out of mind. A very important key to success.

Happy Dieting, see you tomorrow

Catching Goliath

Given his massive lead, my step-dad is Goliath in this situation.

Step-dad – 169

Me – 173.8

He could be lower. No way to know because he only weighs every Monday.

We have set the stakes for the competition although I am changing them a bit. Once a winner is declared the loser has to wear the colors of the winners favorite football team (college). He hates LSU with a passion so he will have to wear LSU purple and gold and I would have to wear Tulane green and blue at the next big family gathering. 😀

It almost killed him to put on a LSU baseball cap at the last family gathering so having to wear a LSU shirt all day could induce seizures.  It will definitely motivate him to beat me. He is currently unaware of my amendment to the bet that we must wear the colors at a big family gathering.

Given the lead he has, I might have bitten off more than I can chew but it will be fun as long as it lasts a few weeks.

Weight Statistics

323/173.8/165

I continue to lose the weight gained last weekend. I wish it would fall off a bit faster. I am not sure how I am going to be able to beat my step-dad to 165 with all of the minefields I need to walk through in the next week. I have at least 3 bad meal opportunities in the next week. Hopefully I can force myself to behave and keep my eye on the prize.

Yesterday’s Meal Plan

Breakfast – Burger with cheese

Lunch – Broiled chicken and salad

Dinner – Broiled chicken and salad

Snack – Cheese

Calories – 1292

Biking – 499

Net Calories – 793

I imagine the calories burned number is a bit higher than reality but most sites have a similar number.

I am a bit hungry right now which is why I decided to get to work on my daily blog. I’m taking my tip from yesterday to heart.

Biking Update

More rain, but I was able to get out at some point yesterday. It really has been overcast and rainy for a long time. I’m starting to lose my biker tan. I’m not quite as freakish looking with white hands and dark brown arms because the sun is never out anymore.  Well that and the fact I don’t ride until 6pm or 7pm when the sun is going down.

I have moved to the BIG BOY GEAR. I am now using the big front gear. That means that once again my legs are taking a bit of a beating and I might end up putting muscle on which could kill my chances in the race to 165.

The ride was bit tough even though the wind was almost nonexistent. I was soaking wet with sweat by the time I made it up to my apartment.

Road Marker 410 – 10 Miles

Tip Of The Day

Plan ahead.

You can’t just wing it. You need to plan your meals and snacks ahead of time to make sure temptations are at a minimum. You need to make sure you always have healthy snack choices and that you know exactly what you will be eating for each meal. This helps you get in and out of the grocery store without damaging your diet.

I hate cooking and cleaning, so I make big batches of different things and freeze them. Believe me, in the past, cooking and cleaning gave me an excuse to quit and toss in the towel. This time I realized I needed to cut down on cooking and cleaning. I have used my crock pot a ton. I usually make 8 to 10 portions and keep some in the fridge and freeze the others.

Planning ahead and simplifying things will help you be successful on your new journey. 😀

Happy Dieting, see you tomorrow
