Victory!!!

There was the miracle on ice. The US victory of the Soviets in the 1980 Winter Olympics.

Joe Namath and the Jets defeat the Colts in one of the biggest upsets in sports history.

Then there was Tyson vs Douglas. Odds makers had Tyson heavily favored. Nobody on the planet thought Douglas could take out Tyson. Not only did he win. He demolished Mike Tyson.

Then an epic struggle began that would have far-reaching consequences throughout history.

Sam vs John (Weight Watchers vs Atkins)(Tulane vs LSU)

The battle is over.

Final Competition Weigh-In

Me – 165.2

Sam – 168

Against all odds the forces of good once again vanquished tyranny. 😀

I kid.

Good luck to Sam. He has 3 more pounds until he hits his goal.

I would like to dedicate this victory to my mom who has been a great source of support during this very trying period of my life. Thank you mom, I love you. 😀

I also need to thank all of you readers for helping to keep me honest. 😛

Lunch – Broiled chicken and salad

Snack – None

Calories – 1450

Biking – 0

Net Calories – 1450

Now comes the hard part. 😛

Maintaining my weight in the 165 to 170 range. I thought about losing a few more to maintain in the 160 to 165 range but I think 158 pounds is probably enough to lose.

Today is the 17 month anniversary of my diet. 17 months!!!

I went to Walmart and bought oatmeal and bread. My diet is about to change pretty drastically as I shift back to carbs. I am a bit concerned with the sodium level.  It is going to be a good bit higher than my diet level.  I’ll keep an eye on my blood pressure to see if it makes much of a difference.

I’ll need to tweak and change my maintenance  over the next few months to see what works and what does not work.

I will also be adding more planned cheats into the mix. I am sure the next few weeks will be bumpy and a bit scary as the scale bounces around. 😀

Glad I have you guys to help me stay on the straight and narrow.

Biking Update

Stomach issues at the last minute killed my ride last night. 😀

Tip Of The Day

Practice what you preach.

You have no idea how hard it was for me to stay away from the Chinese buffet this afternoon. I had myself totally convinced that it would be fine to go hog-wild on the same day I won the contest and just about hit 165.

Then my tip about not using food as a reward kept bouncing around my head.  The evil devil on my left shoulder told me just to go ahead and run out to celebrate. The sour puss good angel on my right shoulder reminded me I would have to come here and fess up. 😛

No Chinese food was harmed in the making of this post. 😀

Don’t reward yourself with food.

No sense wasting a potential planned cheat on a Monday anyway. I need to save those for weekends. I can actually eat like the humans out there now. 😀

Personal Note

It really is staggering to have lost 158 pounds after being overweight for almost my entire life.  Heartfelt thanks to all of you that have helped me along the way. Shout out to my friends at Elmeer Place who taught me how to live again. 😀

Happy Dieting, see you tomorrow

  1. You’re so funny! But sincere congratulations for being the winner – not just for this mini-contest, but overall in your weight loss journey.

  2. congrats to you. What a great thought about not using food as a reward. I had given it some thought earlier and then decided that no, I would prefer a massage or a pedicure. Non food rewards.

Good luck on the maintenance. I had a meeting today to discuss a safety program with a large non profit corp that has had it’s share of Workers Comp claims. I said that safety is like dieting. It’s not enough that you get to your goal, you have to continue doing the work to STAY at your goal.

    I’ll be watching.

    • Thanks. Yup the journey continues but hopefully maintenance will be a little easier.:D

  3. Congrats! I knew you’d do it! 🙂

    • Thanks. I was nervous when the race started but I knew I had the focus to take the prize. 😀

  4. Oh. My. Gosh. Gooooaaaall! Congratulations!!

  5. Dude, that’s so crazy. Proud of you. I”m doing p90x right now and it’s working like a charm. Shooting for a 40lb loss over 5 months. I’m two weeks in and down 7.5, your blog is inspiring to say the least. Congrats!

  6. Picture me bowing in homage to your success – you rock!!

  7. Congratulations to both of you; this demonstrated an astounding level of commitment.

    Good luck in good health,
    David

  8. Congratulations!! I am so happy for you!!!! It has been amazing to see your progress and I look forward to following your maintenance process as well 😀

    • Thanks. I look forward to watching you crash that 200 barrier soon.

  9. Congratulations! You have been an incredible inspiration to me and when I have felt down or defeated, I have often come to your site for encouragement. Your dedication to yourself and to your blog is amazing and I thank you for sharing your days with us. I look forward to watching your progress! Much love to you!

  10. OMG… congrats, you so rock. THIS IS SO BIG IT NEEDS TO BE BREAKING NEWS ON CNN announced by Anderson Cooper.

  11. Congratulations. I know how hard this is.

I hope you’ll keep the blog going so we can follow your progress in maintenance. To be honest that’s the phase I’m really interested in. I am on my 3rd attempt to lose weight – the first time I lost 90lbs and put most of it back on.

    Anyway, really well done!

    • Shuggie

The whole point of the blog is to keep me honest in maintenance so the blog will continue. 😀

  12. Congratulations to John for winning the race to 165#, but more congratulations on losing 158#. Weighing 165# and losing 158# you effectively lost a person. Sam

  13. Yea, GRUMPY!! I am getting ready to go weigh in and I saw this and I just had to take a moment to congratulate you! VERY AWESOME! I am so glad that you have made goal. When I get back I am going to post this post to the BKC Wall of Fame. Yeah! You did it! I have no doubt that you will make it through maintance, you have worked so hard and long that you have new habits that will carry you through to continued victory. I feel sure of it! 😀

    • I imagine I will be able to maintain but it will be bumpy as I adjust back to a normal caloric intake but once I find my groove it should be a piece of cake compared to the last 17 months. Mmmmm cake. 😀

      • I am sure … did you do atkins induction for the whole 17 months?

      • Nope. I would get sick of no carbs and and some back in for a month and stall and go back on induction. I would bet I was on inuduction for 12 + months over the 17.

Plus my cheats probably knocked me in and out of ketosis from time to time.

      • I think that is what I am battleing right now. I am thinking of doing Atkins induction for a week or two and then to change things up a bit so that I can get sick of eating no carbs then go back to shakes.

I am going stark-raving-crazy-out-of-my-mind at the thought of one more shake. I mean I am eating (good stuff) but way off plan, because I feel nuts by the whole thing.

      • You need to do what you think you can stick to for a bit. If you are miserable with shakes it might be time to take a break. Just remember how easy it is to slip back into the old lifestyle so it is best to try something new if miserable.

  14. Congratulations on getting to 165# first, but more congratulations on losing 158#. With you weighing 165# and losing 158# you effectively lost a person. Sam

    • Thanks Sam. The competition gave me the boost I needed to finish off the job.

  15. Yay you! And good luck with your next goal.
