Breaking Bike News

Per Fed Ex tracking, the bike, the helmet and the gloves are all on trucks scheduled for delivery today.  So by the end of the day, I should have my full delivery.  The Air pump was on my doorstep when I opened the door to get the paper this morning.  Uh oh. No excuses. Now, I need to figure out how to put it together, then  I have to ride it. Rats, it was so much easier to complain about it than ride it. 😀


Yesterday’s Meal Plan

Breakfast – Leftover ribeye and onions

Lunch – Chicken thigh with onions and salad

Dinner – Hamburger Patty with salad

Snack – String cheese

Calories – Under 1200

Miserable day here in the Big Easy. It has been raining cats and dogs since early this morning.  So no bike riding today even if the bike gets here in time for me to put it together. Although I am not sure it won’t take me several hours and many tweaks to actually make the bike road ready. Also need to figure out if I have to register the bike.

Well, I lost the little bit of weight gained on my birthday so I am back to a 25 year low on my weight. Every ounce I drop is a low not seen since I was under 15.  😀

Feeling good today and since I haven’t read the paper or watched the news I don’t have much to rant about. That could certainly change by mid-afternoon. I haven’t looked outside to see if my car is under water. I guess I should do that before proclaiming this post a rant free day. All clear.

Yup Lent has arrived with the close of Mardi Gras. I am not Catholic but I went to Catholic schools most of my life and developed the habit of following Lent. I haven’t done it in years. I’ve given up alcohol and almost all food so I don’t have anything to give up in the food and beverage department. I already keep my language in check for the most part, so what to do for Lent.

Only one thing I could think of to give up and I needed to tone down the amount I was drinking anyway. I am saying good-bye  to coffee for lent. You are on notice. I will be The Angry Grumpy Man for the next few days as I go into caffeine withdrawal.

I also plan to ride my bike every day once it is up and running and I plan to do a little cleaning every day instead of letting things pile up.

Tip Of The Day

Knowledge. Yes on a diet there are several things you should know before diving in.

1. You need to know you are healthy enough to tackle your diet and exercise plan. I started by going to see a doctor for the first time in 100 years.

2. Weight. Yes, you need to know your starting weight even if you hate climbing on that scale. Seeing progress is what motivates most of us to continue.

3. Diets are about restricting calories. You need to know how many calories you can take in each day and still lose weight. Here is a nice calculator over at livestrong that determines your ideal calories per day to lose 1 or 2 pounds a week.

4. Keeping a daily food and exercise journal helps you figure out what is working and what is not working.

5. Calorie Counting. You need to know what you are eating to see if you are under you calorie goal.  Here is a link to start, if you need to find nutritional information on a food item.

6. When you have to go out, do your homework and look for restaurants with nutritional data online. Then steer your friends to that restaurant and go with your safe selection you picked at home.  DO NOT OPEN THE MENU at the restaurant.  Once you open that menu, your brain will convince you that the 14 layer nachos have the same calories as the grilled chicken salad.

7. If you choose a specific diet plan, be sure to read up on it. Not just the good, but also the negatives. You need to hear both sides of the story before selecting a diet plan.

8. I’m not a fancy phone owner but many of my friends from another weight loss thread swear by the livestrong application to count their calories and maintain their records.  Here is the site.

Relaxation Friday


It appears getting back into Atkins induction has worked.

For those people not familiar with Atkins, the first stage requires that you eat less than 20 net carbs per day.

This changes the engine that runs your body from a carb burning engine into a fat burning engine (ketosis). It is just common sense that to lose weight it would be best for your body to burn fat first so that is why Atkins works.

I’m not going to worry about the bike anymore. It appears I only have two options at this point. I can wait until 3/12 and get a $25.00 discount (they raised it last night) or I can get a refund but I will still have to go into the store when the canceled bike arrives and cancel it in person or I will be charged.

I think I am just going to take the $25.00 which I can use to buy the bike helmet but that means it will be at least another week before I get up on the levee.

The thing better arrive by the 12th. It really will be Armageddon if something else goes wrong. 😀

I know it is a broken record. I pretty much have the same thing every day. Having a regular routine makes things easy. Yes it may make things boring but boring is safer for me than difficult. If I have a difficult menu, that could give me excuses to cheat or give up. Having a set routine is important for some people. Other people need a touch more excitement and variety but for me I need something that is easy so I can’t make a single excuse not to follow the routine.

Wal-Mart…….oh wait. I said I was going to relax and not get stressed out over anything today. 😀

The rant has been closed today so that the Grumpy Man can relax.

Resist urge to scream about Wal-Mart………..

Ahhhhhhh, that’s better. Urge to scream resisted. Time for a relaxing happy Mardi Gras weekend if the darn weather doesn’t spoil the fun. 😀

Tip Of The Day

Don’t shop hungry. This is a good tip for people on or off diets. Try to shop after eating  a meal or have a healthy snack before doing your grocery shopping.

Simple step, but it can really keep you from making some disastrous meal and snack choices.

It is also best to have a grocery list. Have all your meals planned out and the ingredients on a list.  You need to get in and out of that store without making any purchases that could derail your diet so have a list and don’t enter the store starving.

Wal-Mart Armageddon Thursday!

Special Armageddon Edition Rant

Why must Wal-Mart go out of their way to make me feel like the poor little tyke to the left?

As I have said before, I can’t understand the Wal-Mart online system that doesn’t match orders with the selected pickup store if they actually have the item in stock. That seems like the rational way to handle the transaction but no, the item must come from the central office.

The scheduled site pickup date was between 2/28 – 3/4.

That had me annoyed to start out. I emailed them that I wasn’t thrilled with their online system.  I received a response in which they apologized for my confusion. They also told me I would receive a call within 1-3 days. That timeframe has long since passed without the call.

I have also discussed my dismay at their worthless tracking system which never seemed to update. Earlier today it still showed no progress but it had not been updated since 2/23/2011. So no update for almost 7 days.

Until a few minutes ago.

That was my head exploding as I  read that the shipment was delayed  and now the expected pickup date is  3/12 /2011.

19 days after placing an order for  the bike that is in stock in the store I  set for pickup???

Does anyone out there find 19 days  acceptable for an online order?

Heck, why should I believe it will  arrive then? It was supposed to come  by the 4th at the latest. It will not. They were supposed to call me within 1-3 days. They did not. So why should I believe it will arrive on the 12th? I don’t. Plus at this point I don’t care.

I know I will never order from Wal-Mart again. I hope you won’t either. I can overreact from time to time but I think 19 days is horrible service especially considering they have bikes in stock in the store I set for pickup.

After reading the new tracking info, I shot off an email to them letting them know how unacceptable this delay is. I can’t wait for their smug reply once again probably apologizing for my confusion on the matter.

I’ll be sure to let you know If I get a response to my email. Be sure to stay tuned as breaking news on the matter could come at any minute. 😀


I’m glad to see I stayed under 205. I was worried I might pop back up and still be on the plateau, so I can at least breathe a sigh of relief that I am off the plateau. I just hope I didn’t climb down onto another one. 😀

Tip Of The Day

Fresh food. This can be tough for lots of people either because of budget or not enough time to get to the store, but I can’t stress how important fresh food can be for a diet. Processed food contains massive amounts of sodium and hidden calories and in some instances you can barely taste the sodium or calories. So you have all the negatives without the taste in many cases.

With fresh food, you can season it the way you like it and still have far less sodium than if you bought the meal already processed.

I know this can be a hassle as it means more trips to the store and fresh tends to cost more but in the end it will make your eating habits much healthier and your scale will move quicker.

End In Sight Monday


I am at the low-end of the plateau so hopefully tomorrow I will break all the way through.

Yesterday’s Meal Plan

Breakfast – grapefruit

Lunch – Red beans with sausage and salad

Dinner – Hamburger patties with salad

So it appears the evil plateau is possibly coming to an end. Good thing because I was really getting aggravated.

That of course is half the battle on a diet, heck most of the time the mental aspect is even more of the battle because it is so easy to just toss in the towel and head over to Taco Bell when aggravated or stressed out.

I use this site and a few forums to distract me when I am cracking a little. Letting off a little steam can be the difference between a great day and a day that ends looking like this.

Those trips to taco bell only end with temporary satisfaction followed by a sick stomach, guilt, depression and weight gain. So find a way to distract yourself away from hitting the fast food restaurants when you feel like you are going to crack.

RANT Time!

Wal-Mart! These guys are really bugging me. Day 8 of waiting for my bike. Along with hating their stupid ordering process I also hate their stupid tracking software.

Heck, If you buy something from Old Navy, they seem to give you tons of updates on each little step your clothes take from their warehouse to my door.

Not so much with Wal-Mart. Hey Mr. Wal-Mart manager, what is the point of having a tracking link on your stupid site if it TRACKS NOTHING! For 7 days there has been no activity. Does this mean my bike has not even left the warehouse yet? I know it has been sent since you tell me, but all your tracking link displays on my order is the following picture.

Boy, that sure is helpful. How about maybe spending a few of your BILLIONS and Billions of dollars to actually upgrade your tracking system.

Tip Of  The Day

Spice things up. Luckily for me, I love hot spicy food. I was forced to cut my sodium intake so I needed to add something else to my food to bring a little excitement to the palate.

I’ve tried several of the low to no salt substitutes but they all tasted horrible for the most part. I can tolerate some, but none of them actually make the food taste great.

Then I started using sriracha. It is a very spicy sauce and with only 100 mgs of sodium per teaspoon. I use this stuff on everything these days. Since I eat mostly fresh unprocessed food, I have some room for sriracha at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I still come in under 1500 mgs of sodium per day and at least my food has some flavor now thanks to sriracha.

You need to find ways to make your meals taste better without breaking the calorie or sodium bank. I do it with some heat. This also helps induce water drinking which is good. 😀

TGIF Weight Loss


Stinking water weight is refusing to come off so I am more than a little frustrated the last 3 days. I think I need one of these.

Yesterday’s Meal Plan

Breakfast – Red beans and sausage with salad

Lunch – Red beans and sausage

Dinner- none

Snack -none

Woke up really hungry yesterday so I had my normal lunch meal for breakfast. I wish I could think of something else for breakfast because eggs aren’t cutting it for me. I think I am almost to the point that I am repulsed by eggs.

I then had the same meal for lunch. One of the problems with the red beans and sausage is that it is one of the few meals that I actually love to eat. So keeping my portions under control and trying to keep it to one portion a day is difficult.

I woke up at 4am for some reason and could not get back to sleep so I got up so when 5pm hit, I was tired and feel asleep on the couch.  I woke up at 7:20 and was late for a meeting. By the time, I got  home, it was too late for dinner so I skipped it. With 2 portions of beans and sausage, I was near my 1200 calorie goal anyway.

I know the scale will dip soon enough but I’m more than a little grumpy this week.

I wish my bike would hurry up and arrive so I can get out there and get some exercise to give me metabolism a little boost.

Tip Of The Day

Don’t overdo the exercise.

Exercise is great, but I think many of us overdo it. We go from a sedentary lifestyle to working out 5 to 7 days a week and we end up burning out.

3 to 5 days is a happy medium. Give your body time to rest. You can alternate workout days with rest days or at minimum alternate heavy workout days with light workouts.

In the past, I have been guilty of working out every day which leads to burnout and quitting. Set realistic goals for working out that don’t just end up a daily torture routine.

Giving yourself a few rest days each week will give you a much better chance to stay on the diet and workout plan.

I just hope I take my own advice when Walmart sees fit to let me have the bike I paid them for. 😀
