Terrible Tuesday Plateau News

He hates plateaus too

Start/Current/Goal

323/205.3/185

I’m not sure what the heck is going on. I keep bouncing up and down on this darn plateau and it is wearing on my patience. I guess it is time to change things up a bit.

I sure wish Wal-Mart would get moving and get me my bike. That would be one thing I could change about my current routine. I definitely need to get some exercise. The good news is that I should have the bike by Friday. The bad news is I am not sure I believe the Wal-Mart website.

Yesterday’s Meal Plan

Breakfast – None

Lunch – Red beans and sausage with salad

Dinner – Hamburger patties with salad Snack – String cheese.

Atkin’s

I need to mix things up by going full induction which means 20 grams or less of carbs per day. I was going to wait for after my birthday celebrations but the lack of movement is driving me bonkers so I start Atkins today. My meal plan for the next few weeks will probably be bacon and eggs, chicken thighs with salad and hamburger patty with salad, and string cheese for snacks.

Hopefully Atkins will get things moving again because I am sick of plateaus. January and February were full of them. Those stinkers slowly eat away at your willpower. My resolve is still quite strong but too many long plateaus and I know cracks can form. So back into induction for me and no more carbs.

It shouldn’t be too hard to get back into induction. I’ve only been eating about 50 to 70 carbs a day with the beans and grapefruit. Off the menu they go. I’ll probably buy some fiber supplements to keep things moving at the waste disposal factory. That can be a bit of a problem with Atkins. You need to cut carbs but still get a decent amount of fiber. So the new plan is more exercise (if Wal-Mart decides to let me have the bike I paid for) and Atkin’s.

It is Mardi Gras time down in New Orleans and that means there are all sorts of good foods being passed around all over the place. This may be the first year ever that I don’t have a King Cake to eat during the Mardi Gras season.

Nice to look at, even nicer to eat.

I’ve had some of you balk at my idea of hermit mode, but when people are tossing around those King Cakes, it is best not to be around. Putting yourself in the path of temptation is not a very good way to keep the diet going.

I will probably limit myself to one day of Mardi Gras this year. I’ll probably head out to the parades this Saturday.

People at Wal-Mart that use multiple shopping carts make my blood boil. I get that some families need more than one cart to get all the supplies for the family but what really makes my blood pressure hit the red zone are the people who put one cart in line while the other person continues to shop.

They always seem to arrive with the second cart just as the first one gets to the front of the line. My head explodes when the second cart just strolls up to the front of the line.   One time, the first cart got to the front too soon, so the person proceeded to stall the cashier for 15 minutes. I am lucky a hospital visit was not required after that incident.

Tip Of The Day

Get a full night of sleep. This is actually important. I know it is not always possible but it is important. The body uses the down time to do a lot of maintenance and I think burning fat and disposing of it is part of the maintenance process.

This diet and other stress from life in general, have from time to time given me bouts of insomnia. I’ve had many nights that I simply could not get to sleep and literally every single time that I was unable to sleep the night before, I did not have a drop in weight.

It of course could be coincidence but I don’t think so. The body needs a good night of rest so try to get to sleep early enough each night that you get  your good 8 hours.

Not a tip I follow all the time, but one I try to follow all the time.

End In Sight Monday

323/204.9/185

I am at the low-end of the plateau so hopefully tomorrow I will break all the way through.

Yesterday’s Meal Plan

Breakfast – grapefruit

Lunch – Red beans with sausage and salad

Dinner – Hamburger patties with salad

So it appears the evil plateau is possibly coming to an end. Good thing because I was really getting aggravated.

That of course is half the battle on a diet, heck most of the time the mental aspect is even more of the battle because it is so easy to just toss in the towel and head over to Taco Bell when aggravated or stressed out.

I use this site and a few forums to distract me when I am cracking a little. Letting off a little steam can be the difference between a great day and a day that ends looking like this.

Those trips to taco bell only end with temporary satisfaction followed by a sick stomach, guilt, depression and weight gain. So find a way to distract yourself away from hitting the fast food restaurants when you feel like you are going to crack.

RANT Time!

Wal-Mart! These guys are really bugging me. Day 8 of waiting for my bike. Along with hating their stupid ordering process I also hate their stupid tracking software.

Heck, If you buy something from Old Navy, they seem to give you tons of updates on each little step your clothes take from their warehouse to my door.

Not so much with Wal-Mart. Hey Mr. Wal-Mart manager, what is the point of having a tracking link on your stupid site if it TRACKS NOTHING! For 7 days there has been no activity. Does this mean my bike has not even left the warehouse yet? I know it has been sent since you tell me, but all your tracking link displays on my order is the following picture.

Boy, that sure is helpful. How about maybe spending a few of your BILLIONS and Billions of dollars to actually upgrade your tracking system.

End Wal-Mart rant.

Tip Of  The Day

Spice things up. Luckily for me, I love hot spicy food. I was forced to cut my sodium intake so I needed to add something else to my food to bring a little excitement to the palate.

I’ve tried several of the low to no salt substitutes but they all tasted horrible for the most part. I can tolerate some, but none of them actually make the food taste great.

Then I started using sriracha. It is a very spicy sauce and with only 100 mgs of sodium per teaspoon. I use this stuff on everything these days. Since I eat mostly fresh unprocessed food, I have some room for sriracha at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I still come in under 1500 mgs of sodium per day and at least my food has some flavor now thanks to sriracha.

You need to find ways to make your meals taste better without breaking the calorie or sodium bank. I do it with some heat. This also helps induce water drinking which is good. 😀

Infinite Plateau Sunday!

323/206.1/185

Not the right way to start the new week.

Not happy this morning. I really was expecting a drop today. It really is annoying being stuck on a plateau. I weighed 206.2 last Sunday so I have dropped only .1 pound this week even though I was under 1200 calories every day this week.

Yesterday’s Meal Plan

Breakfast – Grapefruit

Lunch – Red beans & sausage with salad

Dinner – Hamburger with salad

Things don’t seem to be working in the right direction at this point. I sure wish Wal-Mart would get moving on my bike because I need to do something to get the scale moving in the right direction.

I think my next meal plan will be much lower in carbs. Right now I am eating a full cup of beans a day along with a grapefruit. I think I will drop the fruit and lower the amount of beans per day.

With my birthday coming up in March, it will be too hard to stay in induction, but I plan to hit Atkins 100% after my birthday on the weekend following the 7th.

I know this plateau will break and probably not because of any changes I make, but I am getting a little more grumpy than normal and I am normally pretty grumpy.

Tip Of The Day

NEVER and I do mean NEVER reward yourself with food.  I have read many internet posts written by people who had a super workout day so they rewarded themselves with a trip to McDonald’s or Baskin Robbins.

NEVER! Find another way to reward yourself. We need to get out of the food for reward mentality. You can end up taking 2 steps forward and a half mile step backwards with the food reward mentality.

Stuck On The Same Weight Plateau Saturday!

323/205.9/185

Yesterday’s Meal Plan

Breakfast – Eggs

Lunch – Red Beans with sausage and salad

Dinner – Hamburger patty with salad

Snack – String cheese and grapefruit

I am getting frustrated. :~(

3 or 4 days at about the same weight. I was really expecting a drop this morning so I am more than a little grumpy that I didn’t have a drop.

This little guy knows exactly how I feel.

Plateaus are probably one of the top causes for people quitting. They work hard with both their diet and exercise and yet they see no drop on the stinking scale.

The mental aspect of cracking a plateau is actually harder than eating less. Hunger comes and goes but that anxiety, anger and depression that can come from the scale not moving can last for days.

In the last year, I have had many plateaus. Usually they last no more than 4 days or less but I have had a couple that lasted longer, one of which lasted close to two weeks.

Eating is not the solution. Sure it may break the plateau, but going UP is not what we are trying to achieve here.

Tip Of The Day

When you weigh yourself and the scale seem welded in place on the same number day after day, then perhaps you need to switch things ups a bit.

I’ve tried all sorts of things: more exercise, less exercise, breakfast for dinner and dinner for breakfast, menu shift, lower calories, and higher calories.

I can’t say what actually finally breaks the plateau. I can say that the higher calorie option is probably not the way to go. DON’T use a plateau as an excuse to eat up a storm. Learn from my mistakes.

On one forum I visit, one of the members always suggests shocking the system with 3 to 4k calories when you get stuck. I actually took his advice a couple of time, but in reality I was just using his advice as an excuse to eat until I felt I would explode.

Been there, done that.

The few times I have tried the eating more to shock the system, I of course gained weight, anywhere from 1-3 pounds. So instead of moving down, I moved up. I guess it did move me off the plateau, but not in the right direction.

When feeling anger or anxiety over the scale being stuck in one place, you need to distract yourself from thinking about food.

Watch a movie, take a walk, go to the gym, read a good book, play a new video game, get distracted  on YouTube, call a friend. Do anything to take your mind off the diet for a few  minutes. That is usually all it takes for the sour mood to pass.

BUT DON’T EAT!

Happy Dieting, see you tomorrow.
